the gut microbiome
35 years ago, when the microbiome was introduced to me by a patient in my practice, I was mesmerized by what i read. and then began testing when people had serious gut issues. and then often correcting with the right diet, the right natural anti microbials and removing particular medicines from their consumption.
The so called Western DIet
The gut microbiome: Who knew that the bacteria in our guts, stomach on down the line, controls so much of our health, so much of our brain, so much of our metabolism!!!
While most of us have heard of probiotics, what is really happening in the gut is largely determined by the foods we eat and by the medicines we take, in particular, prton pump inhibitors (think Prilosec, a drug that the FDA limited to 2 weeks of use when it was developed and is now over the counter, people taking it all their lives, from infancy on), and antibiotics. It’s these antibiotics that many of us physicians have way over prescribed. Hopefully that trend is diminishing as we learn their potential danger in our gut.
